Opinion: Daniel Ortega’s long goodbye

Nicaraguan nationals, as well as international organizations such as the UN, the OAS, and other human rights groups, have been calling for the ousting of the Ortegas from Nicaraguan government due to rampant corruption and violent suppression of opposition. But this is not an easy battle to be won, as President Daniel Ortega continues to shut down any avenues for dissent. Even though remittances from abroad are increasing, the economy continues to slow at an alarming rate, which may lead to half of the Nicaraguan population to be impoverished by the end of 2019. It seems that for now, this Sandinista government may hold onto its power, so long as there is not another popular uprising – which is certainly not out of the question.
