Opinion: Nicaragua’s tortured path

In Nicaragua, the situation continues to look shaky in the time leading up to the 2021 presidential elections. Both the current regime and opposition entities alike are in the fight to prove their legitimacy. Since the last bout of social instability, Daniel Ortega has implemented many different militarized strategies to maintain order, which controversially has included rounding up protesters. The Ortega family itself is corrupt, unemployment has risen, and foreign investment has fallen – the future remains uncertain.
